Solveig Desilets (formerly Groenland) is a dance professional currently teaching and choreographing in Calgary. Solveig holds her Associate Diploma accreditation with the Cecchetti Society of Canada, and her Mutually Recognized Teacher’s accreditation with the Royal Academy of Dance. She is an honours graduate of the Dance program at Grant MacEwan University, and is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts in Dance at the University of Calgary.
Ms. Solveig held the title of Contemporary Choreographer for Edmonton, Alberta’s only professional ballet company, Citie Ballet, for over ten years. This gives her a unique perspective on the professional dance world, and permits her to prepare the serious student by giving them a real advantage in their upcoming dance events and career aspirations.
Ms. Solveig teaches because she believes that dance, and ballet in particular, can help young people to attain self confidence and teach organizational skills, dedication, discipline, courtesy, and goal setting. Dance also teaches students to love and be fascinated by their own bodies and how they work. Students of dance learn how to enjoy movement and exercise, which is a lifelong gift that many children and young adults are missing. She has experience teaching dance at the recreational, competitive, pre-professional and professional levels.
Ms. Solveig strives to teach ballet with a basis in science; a basis in anatomy and kinesiology. She believes in helping students to achieve the highest possible technique in their studies, so that they can perform according to their choreographers' needs and expectations. Her classes involve lessons on muscles and muscle groups, injury prevention, cross training exercises, and movement theory. She is passionate about passing her knowledge of physicality to her students, which invariably helps them to achieve their dancing goals, whatever they may be.
