If you’re preparing to take your first dance class in Calgary, it’s normal to feel nervous, hesitant, and even a little fearful.  At Prestige Dance Academy, we strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for our students. Our teachers are here to guide you and teach you new skills while fostering your passion for dance. If you’re looking for tips on how to make the most of your first dance class experience, you’ve come to the right place!

1. Come with an open mind and ready to have fun

First and foremost, dance is meant to be FUN where you can meet new friends and learn new moves. For your first dance class, it’s ok to make mistakes! In fact, it’s expected. It means you’re being challenged, and you’re learning something that you’ve never done before.

Come with an open mind to learn dance moves, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Our teachers are more than happy to help.

2. Dress comfortably

Dance is full of energy, and each class requires you to warm up, stretch, and move around the room. Whether it’s ballet, hip hop, jazz, or a contemporary dance class, it’s important to dress in the appropriate dancewear so you can come ready to learn. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle!

3. Arrive early

Arrive 10 minutes before your dance class starts to give yourself time to ask any questions, get a feel for the studio, and use the washroom if you need to. Arriving early helps you calm any nerves and puts you in a good headspace to learn and have fun.

4. Set realistic goals

When it comes to your first dance class in Calgary, we encourage you not to pressure yourself to learn the moves right away or get the choreography down perfectly the first time.

The main goal of your first dance class is to expose you to the world of dance and provide you with a comfortable environment where you can feel safe to learn. Over time, you’ll strengthen these new skills and master them with confidence.

Some great goals to set for your first dance class are:

  • Learn one new move and practice at home
  • Meet a new friend
  • Enjoy the new experience
