Tap dance classes

Ages: 6+

About the class

The tap dance program at Prestige Dance Academy builds technically strong tap dancers through a focus on musical awareness, improvisation, rhythm and a variety of tap techniques.

Getting Started

We structure our tap dance classes around different barre exercises, across the floor progressions, center floor exercises, and improvisation circles.

Tap classes will start in September and run through to June where the class will perform in the year end recital! From September to December tap classes will focus heavily on training and learning tap steps, and combinations.

Our tap classes follow the ADAPT syllabus at Prestige. Our tap teachers are trained through ADAPT as well as any additional training they feel will better themselves in the classroom.

Class Length

Our tap classes range in length from 45 minutes to an hour and a half and take place once a week. Tap dance training begins with the basics at the age of 3 and is offered until the age of 18 at our studio.

Recital & Costume Info

In the new year, tap classes will begin learning their year end recital dance! The year end recital is always a highlight of the year when the dancer’s growth and improvement is showcased on stage in such a special setting. Our recital costumes will be ordered in the winter and arrive to the class mid-spring.

Tap Dance Exams

We are thrilled to offer our tap dancers an opportunity to complete their ADAPT Tap Dance Exams. Tap exam candidates are selected by the teacher, they are not mandatory but strongly recommended.

We believe exams are a very positive learning experience for dancers. Dance Exams allow dancers to set the goal of achieving a certain level on a timeline. Our examination dates are generally set in September and the dancers have all year to work towards a certain level of the syllabus. On this examination date, we invite certified examiners to the studio to put our exam students through an exam class where the students will be given a grade. Following the exam, the students will receive a grade, and feedback on their ability and performance in this exam.

Dancers find the exam process extremely rewarding and feel a lot of pride following the exam.

Dress Code

The colour of our dress code for our tap classes depends on the level of the class however, are always a bodysuit and tights with black tap shoes. Our 5-year-old female tap dancers, generally wear pink bodysuits while our tap dancers aged 6 and up wear black bodysuits. Our male tap dancers are asked to wear a white T-shirt with black pants and black tap shoes. The hair for this class is recommended to be in a ponytail or classical bun.

" Amanda and Lisette have together built a phenomenal business both in their recreational and intensive programs while forming a strong partnership. It's truly a rare delight to witness two business women and great friends who are able to capitalize on their strengths for the greater good of their business and the broader dance community. "
